When a black Lincoln town car pulls to the curb and opens the back door beckoningly, Ox accepts the invitation and steps into a darkness that will force him to choose between the ghosts of his past and the uncertainties of life with Angie, the Capo of the Gracchi crime family and mother of his unborn child. 

In this, the third (and final) book in the Barbary Coast series, Angie asks Ox to protect her from the insane Tommy the Hammer, who has been sprung from jail by Vito Genovese, and is gunning for Angie and any other member of her family that he can kill. Genovese has his sights set on the Gracchi family territory and is using Tommy to do his dirty work.

Things start to get really nasty after Tommy tries to take out the entire Gracchi family by firebombing their house. Angie retaliates by ordering a hit on a Genovese soldier, and only some last-minute negotiating by Stumpy and Ox prevents an all-out war between the Gracchi and the mafia’s Five Families.

However, the peace between the Gracchi and the Five Families doesn’t extend to Tommy the Hammer, who continues his vendetta against Angie and her family. It comes down to a final shootout between Angie, Ox and Tommy in the barren loneliness of the abandoned rail yards that border the decaying piers along the Jersey City waterfront.

Fans of the Barbary Coast series will be happy to know that Stumpy is back, along with Little Lefty Larry Luby, Cousin Sal, and a host  of newcomers including Uncle Jello, Mouse, Big Jules and Cecco Santorico. New Jersey readers will  recognize the Casa Dante, the Clambroth House, and several other well-known locals..
